There were a lot of social issues in the US during that time period. She even felt compelled to make Cora’s lover a German immigrant who was interred by the US government during WWI. Here it is:Ĭhild molestation (by a Sunday school teacher, of course)īirth control (the author even worked a couple of references to Margaret Sanger) It became so bad that I made a little game out of trying to keep a list of all the social injustices she tried to weave in. She awkwardly wrote in little vignettes, like some of Cora’s contemporaries trying to ban drug stores from displaying condoms, that were out of place and didn’t advance the story. The author tried to pack in so much about the social issues of the time that it began to detract from the storyline. Preaching to me is a surefire way to turn me off. The book lost my interest around the halfway mark, when the author started to get too preachy. For the trip to NYC, the author crafts a story with a lot of tension – tension between Cora and dreadful Louise and tension between Cora and her own moral code. The parts about her childhood are well done and the author provides enlightening information about life as an orphan at the turn of the century. Although she was happy with her adopted family, she really wanted to know more about her roots.ĭuring the first part of the book, the author jumps back and forth between Cora’s childhood and her trip back to NYC as an adult. She spent the first six years of her life in a NYC orphanage, until an orphan train delivers her to a family in Kansas. Cora’s motive for going on the trip is so she can try to find out about her birth parents. Louise is a precocious and selfish teenager who goes to NYC to study with a famous dance company and would go on to be a silent film star (in real life). Cora Carlisle is a Wichita housewife who is given the opportunity to chaperone 16-year-old Louise Brooks on a month long trip to New York City during the 1920’s.

Now, with the way bib tights typically tuck into a winter boot, there is naturally only so much you can expect with regard to water entering the shoe. Unfortunately, the ankle cuff was neither tall nor stretchy enough to keep a close seal against my bib tights. That said, the routing of the lacing did mean having to hook it back over the tongue each time I pulled the shoes on, which was a bit of a faff. With the one dial in an accessible location, it was easy making those quick, on-the-fly adjustments – even with heavily gloved fingers. Equally, if a shoe is too tight, then it can reduce the blood flow and result in painfully cold feet. As with all riding, it’s never pleasant to feel like the shoe is too loose, with the floppy, disconnected feeling it gives. Once you’ve used a Boa IP-1 dial, it’s hard to go back, and they’re arguably even more important on a winter boot than a summer shoe. But at the same time, neither did I feel jarred or punished on longer rides taking in more rocky terrain. With the Icestorm 1.0s, I was able to put in hard efforts up technical off-road climbs and those sharp little kickers, which are more punishing when taken slowly, without feeling like I was wallowing or wasting energy. On long, cold, winter rides, a super stiff sole isn’t really necessary nor wanted, but at the same time, an overly flexy pedalling platform can feel like a constant drain of inefficiency. The stiffness of the sole hit a great balance too. Right down to the very low single digits (Celsius) my toes were still kept perfectly toasty and in only mid-weight merino socks. They feel less cumbersome than even race shoes when paired with certain overshoes. The insulation is brilliant in just how warm it makes the shoes – yet without adding an unacceptable level of bulk. Gaerne’s Icestorm 1.0 is almost frustratingly close to completely nailing what it is to be a great winter boot. Rounding things off, there’s plenty of reflective detailing and a reassuringly hefty tag on the back of the shoes to help with pulling them on and off. It's very useful for finding the balance between a secure fit but not going so tight as to reduce circulation to your toes. The binding is taken care of by a single Boa IP-1 dial, which is the model that allows you to both tighten and loosen the pressure by millimetre increments. In addition to content aggregation, in 2015, CATCHPLAY established AsiaPlay Incorporated with the ambition of becoming the leading premium content service provider for movie lovers in Asia. Today, we are the largest provider for premium movie content in Taiwan, aggregating content from Hollywood studios including Disney, Warner Bros., NBC Universal and Paramount in addition to having a wide selection of international independent films and leading local productions for distribution on major operators’ digital platforms. Today, CATCHPLAY continues to look into investment and co-production opportunities internationally and in Asia targeting particularly Chinese-speaking territories and South East Asia following our recent expansion footprints.ĬATCHPLAY started placing significant emphasis on the development of digital movie content years before the others did in Taiwan. In the same year, CATCHPLAY also provided financing and local production support to director Martin Scorsese’s passion project Silence, making it the first international production filmed entirely in Taiwan. CATCHPLAY and partners also control exclusive distribution rights to these films in Taiwan, China, Hong Kong and Macau, with The Revenant generating outstanding box office results from these territories in 2016. In early 2015, we closed a partnership deal to invest in New Regency’s three enthralling titles, namely The Revenant, Assassin’s Creed and Splinter Cell, marking the first investment of a Taiwanese company in major Hollywood productions. Both investments generated considerable box office performance in Taiwan and China respectively. In the same year, we invested in the locally produced film, Paradise in Service and co-produced 20 Once Again with CJ Entertainment for the Chinese market. The best advice for getting out of this “Room” is don’t ever go in it.In 2014, in addition to distributing the movies CATCHPLAY loves, we embarked in earnest co-production and investment projects, venturing into content creation. There’s a preview “movie” on 8mm celluloid that is properly surreal and creepy.īut the clues are more interesting than the deaths or near-death-experiences, the characters as thinly developed as they often are in such genre pictures and the resolution has a fillip meant to make us forget how drab and lifeless most of what preceded it was. The lighting and set design and decor are striking. And then weird stuff, seeing and hearing “echoes” of themselves in mid-escape, in future escape, in their death throes or what have you throws them off. They surrender their phones and set off on their hour-long quest to “free” five people who “disappeared” in the clutches of “The Inventor” long ago. “So is that a clue, or just really good ‘atmosphere?'” Kathryn Davis plays the escape room nerd, the one who keeps saying “You guys are new to this” and who refuses to take what they find themselves going through at face value, all “part of the show.” Hamza Haq is her disinterested boyfriend and Dennis Andres plays the wild card, the guy who jokingly calls himself “a plant, part of the show,” but who isn’t. Horseback riding is out, a car breakdown leaves them in a small town which has a garage, a diner and apparently, an “escape room” in a Tudor style mansion outside the town limits. The story? Disinterested, lip-glossed/phone-distracted teen ( Jeni Ross) takes a day trip to the country with Dad ( Mark Ghanimé). On a tiny budget with a tight schedule, as Hitchcock preached, a detailed shot-by-shot storyboard can ensure you get what you need for the editor to make your thriller just fly by. Pre-planning is a must for any shooting script. “No Escape Room” probably went wrong in the storyboard process. Pedestrian shot selection and editing finish off any sense of “urgency” that the story is meant to generate. Put more effort in the clues and clever ways designed to solve them (numbers written on the whirling blades of a ceiling fan, only decipherable is you can figure out what in the room might give you a strobe effect) than you do to pacing. Pay more attention to the sets in wide shot than the imperiled characters in unnerving close-ups. The best ways to botch that are failing to keep the cast’s energy up, set-up to set-up, letting them slow-walk something that by definition and design is a fast-paced “ticking clock” thriller. The puzzle-it-out clues are challenging as all get out and the house’s clockwork trapdoors, hollow walls and hidden recesses are given a workout.īut something supernatural starts to happen and…there IS no ESCAPE! “No Escape Room,” the latest horror riff on the “escape room from Hell” theme, has the building blocks of a solid genre thriller.įive people undertake a mysterious small town escape room experience.
